Rake it in by siding with Rakan

The feature races at Leopardstown this evening have cut up a bit with the heavy rainfall in recent days, which could proving a turn off for some.

It's a pity that we are left with just a trio of three-year-olds to run in the King George V Cup now and most onlookers will be very surprised if we unearth an Irish Derby contender in the field.

Both Barbados and RAKAN (7.55), inset, are in the race and the Irish Derby is among their list of possible engagements while both are also in the Irish St Leger.

You get the impression that Rakan has always been a colt well regarded by those in the know at Roswell House and Dermot Weld's charge does appear to set the standard in this one.

An easy winner of a maiden at this track, Rakan was just fourth in the Derrinstown but that level of form might be good enough here and that performance saw the handicapper up him 7lb in the ratings.

The owner is more likely to win an Irish Derby with Madhmoon but Rakan could put himself in the picture if impressive enough at the Foxrock track this evening.

Weld would have claims of a big race double on the card with Yulong Gold Fairy but the eight-year-old FLIGHT RISK (6.50) is the pick in the Holden Plant Rentals Glencairn Stakes.

Flight Risk is hardly improving out of sight with age, but his run a fortnight ago at the Curragh was a nice seasonal reappearance and this could be a bit of good placing by Jim Bolger as this isn't the strongest Listed race ever run.

The opening maiden might throw up a star. Six of the nine starters are newcomers and it'll be interesting to see what emerges from them. A NEW DAWN (5.45) did catch the eye on debut and she can put her experience to good use by winning this fillies event.

BASIC LAW (6.20) is two from three for Ger Lyons and another win could be on the cards for the colt in the Leopardstown Golf Centre Rated Race.

Impressive Down Royal scorer MONACO ROSE (8.30) will be expected to defy a penalty in the penultimate race while in the finale CHAMROUSSE (9.00) can prove value for in form Willie McCreery.
