Nolan shows off his talent

LEADING conditional Micheal Nolan once again advertised his riding talents to good effect as he partnered Simply Wings to a clear-cut victory in the SIS Live Handicap Chase at Plumpton.

Nolan had guided Richard Lee's nine-year-old to a debut win over fences at Towcester little over a month ago and he was a 7/2 chance to strike again having finished fourth at Cheltenham on his latest appearance.

Always travelling well, Simply Wings eased into the lead at the second last and finished off his race well to take the near £10,000 first prize by six lengths from Lord Singer.

"He's done that nicely. I won a beginners' chase on him at Towcester in early December and he felt quite nice then. I fancied him big time today," said Nolan.

The trainer's wife, Carol, said: "We'll see what the handicapper does. There are plenty of opportunities. Two and a half miles in the mud is ideal for him."

Having struggled to make an impact in a race won by subsequent Tolworth hero Melodic Rendezvous at Cheltenham last time, 1/2 favourite Valdez made the most of a drop in class as he took the Race Passes At timeform.com Novices' Hurdle by 10 lengths for Alan King and Robert Thornton.

"We dawdled and he has always been a free-running type. He did settle better the last day, obviously in better company," Thornton said. "I didn't want to be going that slow so I've let him run.

"He's won as he liked and he's going the right way."
