No luck for Irish in Melbourne Cup

It was German precision that triumphed in the Melbourne Cup today as over 100,000 at Flemington witnessed jockey Ryan Moore win the 'race that stops a nation' on board Protectionist.

It proved to be a first win for a German-trained horse and it was turned into a procession by Protectionist as he destroyed the 22-runner field.

Johnny Murtagh's two participants, Mutual Regard (14th) and Royal Diamond (20th), unfortunately finished well down the field.
