McCreery hits the big time again

One trainer who deserves a special mention this week is Willie McCreery who enjoyed Group One success with Fiesolana in the Matron Stakes on Saturday.

As a young Kildare supporter in Mick O'Dwyer's time in charge of Kildare, I remember well as Willie McCreery was a vital cog in the team that won two Leinster titles and agonisingly lost out to Galway in the 1998 All-Ireland final.

Now a rapidly up-and-coming race horse trainer, McCreery's ability was showcased on the biggest stage on Saturday.

After Fiesolana changed hands for a big sum over the winter, the Niarchos family had the faith in McCreery to leave the filly in training with him and on Saturday he repaid their faith with interest.
