Dublin manager Dessie Farrell has stressed the fighting qualities of his panel after successfully defending their EirGrid Leinster Under 21 Football Championship crown with victory over Kildare last Thursday evening.

The 3-10 to 1-12 win looked far from secure entering the final quarter.

But the composure and competitive instincts of the Dubs was a crucial element in confirming back-to-back provincial titles, according to the Na Fianna clubman (right).

"We were delighted to get the win but in some ways we put ourselves into a position that we shouldn't have been in because we kicked too many wides and allowed Kildare to remain in the game.

"However, the lads showed great resolve and composure and the important thing is that they never panicked, which is a great sign of their mental strength," said Farrell.

Once again, it was far from a complete display by the holders and Farrell recognises the scope for further improvement if last year's national success is to be replicated.

"As you go on in the championship, better teams will punish your errors and we have a few things to work on ahead of our All-Ireland semi-final," he added.
