Kerry defender Killian Young believes Kieran 'Star' Donaghy's call up to the Irish basketball team can only be of benefit to him when he returns, as expected, to the Kingdom set-up before the Championship.

Donaghy, who has yet to feature for the Kingdom in 2017, was originally expected to rejoin éamonn Fitzmaurice's squad at the end of basketball's Superleague season.

However, that looks set to be pushed back as he is due to start training with the national side at the beginning of April after his international call up on Tuesday.

But Young insists Donaghy will be better for the experience and revealed he has has already trained with the Kerry squad.

"It's an interesting one but I don't know what the format is or what it means for him but I do know he's keen to come back with Kerry and he has an eye on Kerry already," Young said, at the launch of an initiative that sees the GAA and the RNLI join forces to reduce the number of deaths through drowning.

"He has been training with us in the gym so it's not like he's a million miles away from us and he has one foot in already. But I'm not sure what that structure will mean for him.

"I think (basketball) has really brought him on and it has complemented his whole career and it has brought him on with Kerry. I think that's going to really put an edge to him as well, and his handling I'm sure will (benefit from) the basketball."
