South enjoy a mixed bag
Dublin's U-14 South selection enjoyed a day of mixed fortunes in their intercounty football blitz in Hawkfield, Co Kildare last Saturday lunchtime.
The Dubs started off the day with a narrow 1-7 to 1-6 defeat at the hands of Kildare with goalkeeper Stephen Mahon, Alan Murphy of Lucan Sarsfields, Conor Kinsella, Anthony Quinn and Sean Kinsella the pick of the performers.
There was another hard-luck story in Dublin's second match as they succumbed by the narrowest of margins (2-7 to 2-6) to Westmeath.
Tom Ahern of Ballinteer St John's impressed with 1-1 from wing-back and he received valuable support from Cuala's Daniel Bailey and Conor Lawlor.
The final contest of a busy afternoon saw the South team produce their best display as they ran out 4-10 to 2-9 winners over an admittedly weakened Laois selection.
Naomh Olaf's Adam Byrne proved their scorer-in-chief with 2-3 from play while Kevin Desmond and Ciaran O'Reilly also made notable contributions. "It was another good opportunity for the lads to experience football at this level. It was very worthwhile and they are learning all the time," said manager Colm McGinty.
