Sinéad worthy of second All Star

THE birds were singing sweetly as the dawn broke over Kilbogget Park on Sunday morning. The news cheered all at Foxrock-Cabinteely. Sinéad Goldrick had won her second TG4 All Star award.

It was as much a triumph for courage as for craft. Back in the bleak mid-winter, Goldrick picked up a bad injury at UCD. She had just been made Dublin captain. The Dubs were playing Tyrone when she had to be carried off the Belfield pitch. But back she came to lead the Jackies to Leinster gold. Out in Portmarnock in June, she cracked in a wonder goal against Kildare in the Leinster Championship. If the net had not been there, the ball could well have ended up on Trap's table.

She is a role model for the county. A fabulous footballer, the sport is lucky to have her. Her Dublin colleagues Niamh Hurley and Sinéad Aherne were also in the All Star frame. No luck this time, but they also have much to hum about. And what about Cora Staunton, who earned a remarkable ninth All Star? She could overtake Tony McCoy yet.
