Setanta show off potential on debut

HISTORIC HURLERS . . . the first-ever hurling game for Coláiste Pobail Setanta from Ongar in Dublin 15.

They played their neighbours, Hartstown CC, in the Dublin Juvenile E Championship. Hartstown won it, 3-3 to 1-4, but Setanta put up a terrific show.

"Everybody worked so hard. They never gave up. The future of hurling looks very bright here," said Stephen Moore.

Captain, John Hendrick, inspired all with a powerful performance. Kelly Hopkins made some good saves, Erica Manning defended well, Brian Holmes converted two super 65s, Tommy Collins purred at midfield and Ciaran Collins got the goal that will live on forever in the school's records.

Hartstown's hero was the artful Aaron Rice, a most gifted forward. But Setanta are not short of some heroes of their own.

The Setanta stars were: Kelly Hopkins; Erica Manning, Brian Holmes (0-3), Vicky Moyosla; Shane Gaffney, Conor Caffrey, Kevin Carr; John Hendrick, Tommy Collins (0-1); Xenia McElligott, Garry Conroy, Rachel Carr; Dean Flynn, DJ Yussef, Ciaran Collins (1-0). Subs Used: Shadzaib Malik, John Bress, Carl Payayonan, Venz Pagayonan, Sebastain Delgado, Maku Katsande. Mentors: S Moore, B O'Halloran.

X-FACTOR . . . Well done to Na Fianna's Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire (Solo Singing) and to the Trad group from St Oliver Plunkett's/ ER who have qualified for the Leinster Final of Scór Sinsear.

It will take place on March 28th in Ballymore Community Centre Co Westmeath (3pm). It's all-ticket (€10) and tickets must be ordered asap from Barbara O'Neill 086-3782419.

SHOULD OLD ACQUAINTANCE BE FORGOT . . . Nice tribute to Ciarán Whelan in last Sunday's match programme in Castlebar. His fan base is not confined to just the environs of St Anne's Park. No quotes from David Brady in it though!
