Ravens hold strong to fend off Mark's

MICK DEEGAN'S Fingal Ravens survived a late scare to book their place in the next round of the Evening Herald Dublin SFC with a battling win at Balgriffin.

Mark's Barry Redmond flicked the ball to the net for the only goal late on but time ran out for the Springfield side.

The first half started in dramatic fashion with both teams denied by the woodwork. John Kelly burst through only to see his thundering shot rebound off the crossbar while his opposite number Niall Tormey struck the inside of the post with a brilliant left-footed effort.

Dublin senior panellist Darren Daly scored two points for the Ravens before the break to give them the advantage but Barry Kennedy and David O'Callaghan tied up the game before the interval, 0-5 apiece.

The winners were much the better team in the second period. Tormey was in superb from with three points from play while Warren Finnegan's deadball prowess gave Ravens a healthy seven-point lead entering the final ten minutes.

But Mark's refused to give in and two Kennedy points came before Redmond's goal. It proved to be a mere consolation as Fingal held firm.
