Port' prove extra special
LAOIS champions Portlaoise had to show all their experience before overcoming Longford Slashers 1-15 to 3-7 after extra-time in yesterday's AIB Leinster Club SFC quarter-final at Pearse Park.
They now face Kildare's Moorefield in their provincial semi-final next Sunday while Dublin champions St Vincent's, minus the services of suspended duo Ger Brennan and Diarmuid Connolly, meet Meath's Summerhill in the other semi-final.
In difficult conditions Slashers led by seven points in the 40th minute after a Colin Smith point, but failed to score again in normal time as Portlaoise reeled them in to force extra-time courtesy of a Brian McCormack goal which proved the catalyst for their comeback.
Portlaoise were stronger in extra-time, as points from sub Adrian Kelly and top-scorer Craig Rogers saw them two points clear at half-time.
Smith claimed Slashers lone score in extra-time in the 79th minute, and while Kevin Fitzpatrick handed Portlaoise a two-point lead which they held onto in the face of some late pressure.
