O'Neill left to sweat on Coleman injury scare
MARTIN O'NEILL admits that an injury scare over Séamus Coleman is a worry ahead of the new season and the start of the Euro 2016 campaign.
Coleman has been sidelined from Everton's pre-season tour in Asia due to a hamstring injury and while there are still six weeks to go before Ireland kick off the Euro 2016 qualifiers in Georgia, the fitness of his first-choice right back is a concern.
"It's obviously disconcerting but if they're saying the words that Everton are saying, just 'precautionary' and such things, well that's encouraging," O'Neill (pictured) said at an FAI event in Mullingar yesterday.
"Hopefully everything's alright. It's just the last thing you'd want when you're starting, you've had a break and the last thing you want in pre-season is to be hit with an injury, particularly as it seems to be a hamstring injury.
"It's something I don't think he's suffered from before, I don't know," added the Ireland boss.
"Some of the players who have been participating in the World Cup are still recovering and they are not going to be with us, which means the young players have got a unique opportunity to show how ready they are to be part of the first team squad next season," said Martinez, who used Duffy in a pre-season game against Tranmere last week.
