Newest Dub recruit Sweeney suffers injury nightmare
ST SYLVESTER'S climbed to second spot in the Dublin Adult Football League Division 1 table following a hard-earned 2-10 to 1-10 victory over St Maur's at Broomfield last night.
Their win was marred however by a broken leg suffered by Gary Sweeney - the talented half-forward who only last week was added to Pat Gilroy's extended senior panel.
The jet-heeled Sweeney, who was a pivotal player in Dublin’s All-Ireland U21 glories in 2010 and again this year, goaled in the opening half as strong displays by Fionn Carney, Alan Foy, Glen Hazely and Conor Daly in addition to Russy Cleere's 50th minute goal helped the hosts to their three-point win.
The Malahide men remain two points behind league leaders Ballymun Kickhams who recorded their seventh successive league win when overcoming St Oliver Plunkett's/ER by ten points, 2-14 to 0-10, in Páirc Ciceam.
Fiach Andrews impressed throughout from centre-forward alongside Seán George and James Burke while goals by midfielder Elliot Reilly and Kevin Leahy put added daylight between the sides.
At the opposite end of the table, Fingal Ravens climbed off the bottom rung after a narrow 1-11 to 0-11 win over Templeogue Synge Street in Rolestown.
Collie Prendeville at full-back and Darren Daly were solid throughout along with wing-forwards Alan Casey and PJ Casey while Derek Daly's late goal sealed the precious two points for Mick Deegan's men.
Ravens are replaced at the basement by league holders St Jude's who lost by six points, 1-14 to 0-11, to near neighbours Ballyboden in Páirc Uí Mhurchú.
Elsewhere, Parnells' three-point win over Lucan Sarsfields, in which both Darren Rooney and Johnny Murtagh excelled, was noteworthy for the sending-off of Mayo senior Conor Mortimer.
In Division 2 Ciarán McGuinness hit 0-14 for St Peregrine’s in their victory over Nh Barróg.
