Na Fianna clinch county crown
NA FIANNA and Fingallians have provided rich entertainment this season. Just like the men, it took two rousing matches before the county senior champions were declared.
Back in Parnell Park in September, the sides drew the Senior Championship with 2-6 apiece. Five days later, they were back in Donnycarney. This time, it was the flying Fins who prevailed.
It was the first senior championship for the Swords club. Earlier, they had made another slice of history by securing their first Division 1 League.
The quality and tempo of the Championship final, and the replay, left nobody in any doubt how far the sport has travelled in the capital.
Packie Barnwall was made a freeman of Swords. At Na Fianna, there had been a changing of the guard. The Mobhi girls had no manager for a spell. In stepped Adrian Kelly with Ray Dorney and Johnny Quinn. Gradually, they turned the Glasnevin gallop into a sprint.
They won the All-Ireland Sevens. And now they have another trophy for the cabinet – the Division 1 Cup. They beat Fins in the final. It was another great debate. It took place at St Margaret's. The Na Fianna defending was excellent. At the end, both sets of players warmly embraced.
