McCarthy to start O'Moore resuscitation

WALSH CUP (SH) ROUND 1

LAOIS v DIT

(Rathdowney, Today 2.0)

THEY may have fallen miles down the pecking order, but one of the more intriguing managerial stories to follow this year will be watching how Leeside dual legend Teddy McCarthy fares in his newly adopted Laois.

Suffice to say, Teddy will seek an early improvement on their last competitive outing -- a 10-goal debacle against the manager's native Cork.

We're going for a home win.

ODDS: Laois 8/13, Draw 9/1, DIT 11/8

VERDICT: Laois

WALSH CUP (SH) ROUND1

WEXFORD v NUIG

(Bellefield Enniscorthy, Today 2.45)

MODEL Army fans seeking a grand entrance for Liam Dunne may have to wait, after it emerged that the new Wexford boss is stepping aside to allow U21 selector Paul Dempsey oversee an experimental side in the Walsh Cup.

Jim Berry (named at centre-forward) and Colm Farrell (in the subs) are the only two from last year's squad involved ... which may explain why we fancy a flutter on the students.

ODDS: Wexford 4/5, Draw 9/1, NUIG 21/20

VERDICT: NUIG

Baker's choice

WALSH CUP (SH)

WESTMEATH v OFFALY

(Kinnegad, Tomorrow 2.0)

THIS is Ollie Baker's baptism in the Faithful hotseat, and notable inclusions in his first team are dual player Seán Ryan (focusing purely on small ball this year), Diarmuid Horan (back from the US and making his first appearance since 2009) and debutant Duane Dunne at wing-forward.

Westmeath have included Frank Boyle in their Walsh Cup squad following his surprise decision to quit the footballers and pursue hurling instead.

VERDICT: Offaly
