Mayo boss back for Jackies revenge
The excitement has been bubbling in Mayo. Another tilt at the Jackies in the big smoke.
This time it's the Lidl Ladies National Football League Division 1 final in Parnell Park on Sunday (4.0). The last time they met in the capital was in Croke Park last September.
"The better team won on the day. No doubt about that," declares Mayo boss Peter Leahy.
"The question now is how much have we learned from that day. And we have to see how far we have come on since."
Beating Cork in the league semi-final hasn't done the confidence any harm. "Cork are Cork. Great champions. They have been in the last ten league finals, winning nine of them.
"It was a tight match. To be honest, we were holding on by the seat of our pants at times. They did trouble us on every occasion they had the ball.
"We had a bit of luck. You always need that, but we played good football. We scored 1-20 and we only had one wide.
"But you don't play a team like that and not have squeaky moments. Cork are who they are for a reason. It was a great game for us to get."
And now another one. "Yes, Sunday is another huge day out for us. It's another top quality match against the best team in the country, the All-Ireland champions.
"It's marvellous for us to be going up against Dublin. There's a real buzz in training. It's been brilliant. Who doesn't want to be in a national final?"
Peter has been happy with the league campaign.
"Our first goal was to find players, and we did that. We started 28 players in the league this year. We played 32 players in all.
"We'll have six starters who did not play against Dublin in the All-Ireland final. The league initially is about finding players, but then your goals change.
"And as the season went on, we said to ourselves, 'we'll have a right cut at this.'"
