Lilies to end wilting ways

KILDARE v WESTMEATH

Tomorrow, Newbridge (2.0)

IF last year's landslide is anything to go by, Westmeath represent the ideal opponent for a Kildare team down on its luck and/or feeling sorry for itself.

One potential chink in that theory: Westmeath under Tom Cribbin seem a fair bit more organised and resilient than last year's habitual losers.

Having set out in February as promotion favourites, Kildare now meander into March with no points after losing two games that appeared within their grasp - until they leaked a late 2-1 double-whammy at home to Down and then surrendered a four-point lead early in the second half against Meath.

As a Kildare man, Cribbin will know more than most about his potential prey ... but James Dolan is a big loss and unless their confidence is totally shot, surely the Lilies can't wilt for a third game running?

ODDS: Kil 1/3, Draw 8/1, West 16/5

VERDICT: Kildare

ROSCOMMON v MEATH

Tomorrow, Dr Hyde Pk (1.0)

AN early start will allow patrons to skip off afterwards to watch the rugby, but Mick O'Dowd will be more concerned with how Meath actually start, given how they crawled out of the traps on day-one against Galway. They showed commendable fight to rescue a teetering cause against Kildare, but the Rossies away will be a tough nut to crack.

ODDS: Ros 4/5 Draw 15/2 Mth 13/10

VERDICT: Roscommon

GALWAY v LAOIS

Tomorrow, Tuam (2.0)

KEVIN WALSH has already brought consistency to Galway's often-erratic cause: two victories on the bounce, each achieved with identical hauls of 2-13. Laois have been consistent too, in a far less encouraging way.

ODDS: Gal 2/7, Draw 9/1, Laois 7/2

VERDICT: Galway

CAVAN v DOWN

Tonight, Breffni Park (7.0)

HERE'S one early-season stat that few would have predicted: the two teams up from Division Three, Cavan and Roscommon, are hot on Galway heels in the race for promotion after two games.

Hard to know if either, or both, can sustain it but Cavan will spy tonight as eminently winnable, given how they blitzed Laois on their travels while Down faltered at home to Ros.

ODDS: Cav 8/13 Draw 15/2 Down 7/4

VERDICT: Cavan

NFL DIVISION 2
