Laois first up for Farrell's Dubs

DUBLIN will play Laois in the opening game of their Leinster and All-Ireland U21 FC defence next Wednesday (7.30) in O'Moore Park.

Dessie Farrell's team - which features the guts of the 2012 All-Ireland minor winning side - are favourites to complete back-to-back titles, although some of that group may see action for Jim Gavin's senior side in Killarney on Sunday when they face Kerry in round three of the NFL Division 1.

Cormac Costello, Conor McHugh, Shane Carthy, Davey Byrne, Michael Deegan and Eric Lowndes have all seen senior game time this spring.

Laois, meanwhile, made sure of their presence in the last eight after beating Wexford by 4-12 to 0-11 in Enniscorthy last night, a victory which owed much to their three second-half goals.

Level at 1-6 to 0-9 at the break, strikes from Tom Sheil (2) and Laois senior, Evan O'Carroll saw them safely through, more comfortably than expected.

Paul Kingston kicked 0-4 (2) over the hour.

Longford scored four goals last night, putting 4-13 on Wicklow in Newtowncashel.

The Garden County scored just 1-5 and began to crumble after Larry Moran's 10th minute Longford goal.

Moran finished with 1-4 (0-3f) while Rory Connor, Conor Shields and Liam Connerton scored a goal apiece.

Longford will now face Louth, who beat Carlow by 3-11 to 2-10 last night in Darver to advance.
