'Keen edge cuts Chanel to ribbons

Clonkeen College 7-17

Chanel College 0-5

Clonkeen are through to the Dublin Schools Junior 'C' football final after an emphatic 33-point victory over Chanel on Tuesday in Clontarf.

Fielding a team that could have challenged for honours in the 'A' groupings, the Blackrock boys dominated throughout.

Boasting a formidable midfield and forward line combining height with pace, Clonkeen opened their scoring in the first minute when midfielder Conor O'Sullivan was allowed a free run at goal for a point.

Seconds later, they had the ball in the net through their towering forward, David Corish.

After the initial shock of conceding had subsided Chanel seemed to settle and had a chance of their own when forward Eoin Kinsella broke through on goal but his shot to the bottom right corner was knocked wide by full-back Steven Byrne.

Clonkeen pressed on and 11 minutes in Corish grabbed a second goal after some great build-up play through Kyle Braine and Sean Treacy on the right wing.

Chanel gained their first score when half-back Alan O'Leary was fouled outside the 20-metre line and forward Paddy Ellis slotted over.

Clonkeen reacted mercilessly with another goal, this time from forward Aaron Murphy, who pounced on a parried ball from keeper Sean Ratcliff to finish from two yards.

Murphy and Treacy both added points for the southsiders as well as forward Sean Toner.

Quashed

Ellis grabbed another point for Chanel before half-time when he finished expertly.

The second half began much like the first with the team in yellow and black seemingly scoring at will. Corish scored two points in as many minutes before O'Sullivan and Treacy added more to their own tallies.

Any chance of a Chanel comeback was quashed when Jack Beehan placed the ball into the left corner of the goal from 20 metres.

Clonkeen added another three points before they were awarded a controversial goal 15 minutes into the half.

Substitute Adam Mooney's shot appeared to have gone wide, passing through the goal's side-netting but it was allowed stand.

Ten minutes from the end, tireless Chanel midfielder Adam Doyle finally gained the point his performance deserved and he played a part in Christopher Murphy's score as the Coolock team enjoyed their best period of play.

Clonkeen brought on some fresh legs and they won a penalty after a high tackle on sub Ciarán McDermott. Corey Slater finished casually to cap a deserved victory for the southsiders.
