Keane edge helps Olaf to beat Clanns

Naomh Olaf secured the Dublin Minor Football League Division 4 title after finishing strongly to get the better of a battling Clan na Gael Fontenoy by 4-8 to 1-9 at Seán Moore Park last Sunday morning.

Ultimately, it was the visitors' ability to plunder goals that proved the difference between the sides, as team mentor Ger O'Malley conceded at the final whistle.

"It was a tough battle all the way through but we were just able to get goals at the right time that left a gap between the teams. We beat them twice in the league but we knew they would be tough opposition and so it proved but thankfully we had enough to get over the line," said O'Malley, who steps down with fellow mentor Des Noonan after 11 years at the helm.

Tom Keane, fresh from hitting 1-7 for their U16 team the previous day, scored the opening goal for the visitors and despite not playing to their optimum, a second goal by Keith Noonan ensured Olaf's a 2-2 to 0-6 interval lead.

Influential

The hosts had impressed initially with Mark Stafford showing especially well at corner-back while David Meenan was very influential in the pivotal centre-back position, allowing Thomas Walshe and Aaron Montgomery to shine in attack.

However, they suffered a massive blow when Keane added a third goal within minutes of the restart but their confidence never waned as they fought back through the contributions of Dean Gannon, Jack Mulcahy and Seán Rimmer while Austin Dodd's goal seven minutes from time offered Clanns fesh hope.

It proved insufficient by the end with Naomh Olaf finishing in the ascendancy through a goal from substitute Joe Rafferty and the influential promptings of Mark Doyle, Conor Kirwan, Andrew Kyne-Delaney and Daragh O'Connor. "We are gutted," said Clanns manager John Dodd. "We thought we had a good chance coming into the game but we just didn't perform on the day and Naomh Olaf had some very good forwards."
