In brief: Burnt Cats to claw students' Cup dreams

WALSH CUP (SH) QUARTER-FINAL

KILKENNY v NUI GALWAY

(Ballyragget, Tomorrow 12.0)

BRIAN CODY'S first foray into the field since five-in-a-row went belly-up has been put back a day, with the throw-in moved 24 hours until noon tomorrow.

That may be a case of merely delaying the inevitable first victory of 2011 for a squad still hurting from last September ... except that NUIG, the reigning Fitzgibbon Cup holders, scarcely qualify as lambs to the slaughter.

The Galway students also have a head start, blitzing Offaly in the second half of last Sunday's opener, and much may depend on the strength of Cody's chosen line-up.

Either way, expect Cody's Cats to be fearsomely committed.

ODDS: Kilkenny 1/4, Draw 12/1, NUIG 14/5

VERDICT: Kilkenny

Injuries won't stop Galway

WALSH CUP (SH) QUARTER-FINAL

GALWAY v DIT

(Ballinasloe, Tomorrow 2.0)

HISTORY of sorts here, as the first Walsh Cup game to be played west of the Shannon.

The home side are seriously depleted, as John McIntyre's casualty list keeps mounting. David Hayes and Niall Healy are the latest additions to a list that already includes long-term absentees Shane Kavanagh, Damien Hayes, Aidan Harte, Kevin Hynes, Fergal Moore, Damien Joyce, Joe Gantley and Aonghus Callanan, leaving the Galway boss with just 20 players to choose from.

And guess what? They'll still win!

ODDS: Galway 1/5, Draw 10/1, DIT 15/4

VERDICT: Galway

Laois to notch Wexford win

WALSH CUP (SH) QUARTER-FINAL

LAOIS v WEXFORD

(Rathdowney, Tomorrow 2.0)

BRENDAN FENNELLY is already up and running as Laois boss, thanks to last Sunday's four-point victory over UCD -- aided by an 11-point haul from Willie Hyland.

This year, Fennelly's O'Moore County are set to be without several key players, who are studying overseas or else have emigrated for work, but they might just have a competitive edge against a Wexford side making their seasonal baptism in Rathdowney.

ODDS: Laois 13/8, Draw 10/1, Wexford 1/2

VERDICT: Laois
