Higgins back to boost Mayo
Mayo have received a major pre-championship boost after Keith Higgins returned to Stephen Rochford's squad this week.
The veteran defender, who won his fourth All Star last year, had spent the entire spring with the Mayo hurlers, for whom he played a starring role in their triumphant NHL Division 2B campaign.
His ongoing absence from the football fold had prompted speculation over whether he would return for the championship.
However, the Mayo News has now revealed that Higgins trained with them on Easter Bank Holiday Monday - a significant fillip ahead of their Connacht SFC quarter-final showdown with league finalists Galway on May 13.
Mayo are already without former Footballer of the Year, Lee Keegan, for that eagerly-anticipated clash with Galway after he suffered a dislocated shoulder in a League defeat to Tyrone in Castlebar last month.
Cillian O'Connor was also injured in that match, and though his hamstring injury is not expected to keep Mayo's captain out of the Galway game, he will miss a significant part of the build-up.
Chris Barrett is also poised to return.
