Dubs denied by Daly and cool 'Comer

Castlecomer CS 1-17

Dublin South 2-10

A lack of consistency cost Dublin South dear as they went under to Castlecomer Community School (Kilkenny) in the opening round of the Leinster colleges' senior hurling 'A' league in Castlecomer yesterday.

The losers started poorly, and didn't really find their feet until the third quarter when they took the challenge to the opposition. However, Castlecomer showed some lovely skill and a good spirit at the finish when the pressure was greatest.

"We would be hoping to have a good season," said Castlecomer manager, Pat Murphy afterwards. "Both teams showed plenty of talent, and both should improve as the season progresses. We have most of the side that contested the under-16 Leinster final two years ago, so with a bit of luck we can enjoy a good run."

The winners were by far the better team during the first half when the Dubs were very hesitant. With the aid of three scores from the all action Stephen Daly, 'Comer raced 0-7 to 0-2 clear by the 21st minute.

Flopped

Dublin lacked penetration up front and their first point from play didn't arrive until the 22nd minute when Karl Russell hit the target. They flopped back again after that and when Daly kicked a goal nearing half time it left the divide at 1-11 to 0-6.

Dublin were more on the pace of things after the turn. When Naoise Green finished a fine solo run by shooting a goal in the 35th minute, they were back in the contest. Castlecomer recovered their step with the help of points from Charles Dwyer (two), Andrew Carron and Stephen Daly to leave them nine clear with more than 20 minutes left.

Dublin drove forward again. Uplifted by the daring Green and Tom Devlin they threw caution to the wind and blasted the opposition. When Niko Salvino finished a loose ball to the net in the 52nd minute, the deficit was back to four points and the issue was wide open.

'Comer held their nerve, though. Kevin Delaney and Brian Cahill produced powerful hurling in defence -- when Charles Dwyer clipped over a point, victory was theirs.
