Donnelly fires Saints' success
St Jude's 1-13 Whitehall Colmcille 0-6
St Jude's advanced to the quarter-finals of the Dublin Senior Football Championship following their less-than-convincing 10-point victory over Whitehall Colmcille at Parnell Park last night.
With a slight breeze at their backs, Jude's started in the ascendancy and they moved two points clear by the third minute following successive frees from Declan Donnelly and Brendan McManamon.
Donnelly added a point from play soon after as their opponents struggled to make inroads but from an isolated attack, Cormac Costello converted a superb free from under the stand.
Donnelly was especially bright in the early exchanges and he added another point from play in the 10th minute prior to Peter Corry registering Whitehall's first score from play at the end of the first quarter.
That score seemed to settle Colmcille and after their goalkeeper, John Bollard, had made a fine block from Tom Lahiff in the 18th minute, their confidence rose as both Eoghan O'Donnell and Costello added fine solo scores in the ensuing three minutes.
However, their optimism was punctured two minutes before the break as Donnelly raced onto Brendan McManamon's precise pass to shoot low beneath Bollard from eight yards.
Any hopes of a Whitehall comeback were quickly dispelled within four minutes of the restart as Brendan McManamon and Donnelly shared three points to increase Jude's margin with the concluding exchanges lacking any spark as the match petered out.
