Davy adds spice to showdown

It was only when he let the first roar at Alan Kelly roughly 12 seconds into the second half that we figured out what the first half of Wexford v Kilkenny had been missing by virtue of Davy Fitzgerald watching that part of the match from an analysis booth halfway up the main stand.

Not that his team required his presence to fire themselves up.

Wexford were better with the ball both with the wind and against it than Kilkenny but also won the majority of the physical exchanges in Wexford Park.

Lee Chin looks back to his pre-2018 best while Rory O'Connor has the makings of a star this summer.

And while Brian Cody looked to a bench with only unproven options, Davy was able to bring on Paudie Foley, Diarmuid O'Keeffe and Cathal Dunbarr - each of whom made notable impressions in different areas of the pitch and helped Wexford stretch away.

Adding spice to this game was Fitzgerald's words this week about Micheal Donoghue.

"Donoghue always seems to get up for me, I don't know what the story is," he observed.

"Every time he plays me he's like a lunatic."

"I was watching him on the sideline the last day and he wasn't so bad when I was watching the tape back.

"He's always managed to get right up for it. Maybe I haven't been up for it enough when I've played him. Maybe I need to have a look at that, you know."

Galway have moved stealthily through spring, with Donoghue using 34 players and only Seán Loftus starting every game.

He also has his St. Thomas contingent to come back in after this weekend although given what's coming in April, it's only reasonable to question both managers' motivations here.

Davy's insistence that he "couldn't give a f***" about the League is offset by the seemingly omnipresent axe he has to grind with each opposition and their manager so expect a spicy one here.

ODDS: Galway 8/13, Draw 8/1, Wexford 7/4
