Crummy goal caps off Lucan's victory over Cuala

LUCAN SARSFIELDS 1-15, CUALA 0-12

CHRIS CRUMMY'S 56th-minute goal helped Lucan Sarsfields record a laboured six-point win over Cuala in their Evening Herald Dublin Senior Hurling Championship encounter at Parnell Park on Saturday evening.

Crummy, who captained Dublin on their run to the All-Ireland Minor Hurling final, was on hand to flick to the net from Mick May's lengthy delivery as Cuala's challenge ultimately fizzled out.

The opening half was an even encounter with former Dublin senior, Kevin O'Reilly, registering two points from placed balls to add to Johnny McCaffrey's fine second-minute point.

The Dalkey outfit stayed in touch through excellent points from Paul Schutte and David Cunningham while Cian Waldron's sublime sideline score left the sides level after 18 minutes.

Sars began to put daylight between the sides with O'Reilly's dead-ball accuracy to the fore as he notched four more points before the break and Robert Lambert's point from play helped Lucan to an 0-8 to 0-5 interval lead.

By the 34th minute, Lucan were ahead by double scores through an O'Reilly free and a brilliant score from distance by May but they were held scoreless for the next 10 minutes as Cuala clawed their way back into contention through four unanswered points by John Sheanon.

O'Reilly ended Lucan's barren spell with a tidy point from play at the end of the third quarter and he could have stretched his side's advantage in the 46th minute but his well-struck penalty was diverted around the post by Oisín Gough for a converted '65'.

Reliant

Cuala were almost completely reliant on placed balls for scores and impressive centre-back Shane Kiely landed two long-range attempts as his side looked to mount an unlikely comeback.

Crummy's goal ensured his efforts were in vain while at the opposite end Seán McClelland shone in a solid Lucan rearguard who confirmed their progression through late points by May and the tireless Lambert.
