Coffey hoping to stir up Offaly

TOM COFFEY will throw four debutants into the lion's den when Offaly face Kildare in this Sunday's Leinster SFC quarter-final at O'Moore Park.

Coffey himself will be making his competitive debut as manager following Gerry Cooney's end-of-league resignation, and the former Offaly defender is placing his faith in a quartet of newcomers for this daunting opener.

There are first championship starts for John Moloney at full-back, Michael Brazil at centre-back, Eoin Rigney at wing-back and former senior county hurler Daniel Currams on the '40'.

Alan McNamee returns at midfield alongside Richie Dalton but, as expected, his younger brother Niall is still sidelined through injury, robbing the Faithful of their attacking talisman.

GALWAY football captain Finian Hanley was set to find out today if he will be available for the All-Ireland qualifiers next month. Hanley was forced off in the second-half of his side's surprise Connacht semi-final loss to Sligo on Saturday night, but manager Alan Mulholland is hopeful that his full-back is not as seriously injured as initially thought.

AARON KERNAN will also know within the next 24 hours if his hamstring injury is set to sideline the Crossmaglen star for Armagh's opening qualifier clash.

OFFALY (SF v Kildare): A Mulhall; S Sullivan, J Moloney, S Pender; B Darby, M Brazil, E Rigney; A McNamee, R Dalton; R Brady, D Currams, N Smith; K Casey, G Guilfoyle, A Sullivan.
