Classy Connolly hits hat-trick as Vins defy Lucan

DIARMUID CONNOLLY inspired St Vincent’s to a comprehensive 3-18 to 1-14 win over Lucan Sarsfields in their Dublin AFL Division 1 encounter at Páirc Naomh Uinsionn last Saturday evening.

Connolly, who will miss next Sunday’s Leinster Final through suspension, kicked a superb 3-5 in an outstanding display as the hosts excelled after the break thanks largely to the efforts of Dáithí Ó Murchú, Eoin Brady, Tomás Quinn, Ken Fernee and Ciarán Dorney.

There was another high-scoring encounter at Broomfield as St Sylvester’s had too much firepower for St Mary’s, pulling away in the second-half to a 3-17 to 2-9 victory.

A goal from the excellent Blaine Kelly left the visitors trailing by just 0-9 to 1-3 at the break but with Pádraig Bracken and Ross Hazely dominating midfield, Syls raced away thanks to 2-2 from Conor Daly, 1-2 from Micheál McCarthy and 12 points shared by Darren Clarke and Nigel Dunne.

In Tymon Park, Fingal Ravens maintained their fine recent form as Niall Tormey’s deflected late goal helped them overcome league holders St Jude's by 1-8 to 0-10.

Derek Keogh kicked three points for the visitors from wing-back and he was ably abetted by Daryl Kavanagh, Ciarán Norton and Collie Prendeville as Ravens secured their fourth straight league win.

Two early goals from David Matthews and Garreth Smith proved crucial as St Oliver Plunkett's/Eoghan Ruadh got the better of Parnell’s by 2-11 to 0-11 at Martin Savage Park.

Conor Walsh gave an impressive outing at centrefield for the hosts along with James O’Donoghue and despite the late dismissal of full-back Shane Lyons for a second booking, Plunkett’s saw out the win thanks to three points by substitute Daragh Brogan.

In Division 2 former Dublin star Coman Goggins came out of retirement for an under-strength Ballinteer St John’s to help his club to a narrow 0-13 to 1-9 victory over St Mark’s.
