Charlie wants a show of support for ¤10k fan prize
CHARLIE CLEARY was at home. That was unusual in itself. Sabrina Healy called. She's the secretary of Tyrrelstown.
She told Charlie the club had nominated him for the Supervalu Real GAA Supporter award. "I nearly fell to the floor," he laughs.
He is from Wexford. He is married to Maria. They have three children -- Patrick, Conor and Seán.
The family were just setting off on a little holiday to Wexford when the phone rang again. It was Supervalu. Charlie had made the last four. "I was stuck for words," he admits.
Everyone has a good word for Charlie. Tyrrelstown are only going three years. He has been at the heart of it.
Out training and running teams all weekend and most of the week too. "Herself is not as much into it, but she doesn't stand in my way. I'd better say that!" he grins.
He's been living in the area for a few years now. He is a converted Dub.
"I went to Croke Park with a Dublin jersey on me, and my eldest lad, Patrick (8), said I was a Dub now, although he supports Wexford."
He was out selling raffle tickets the other night. "They all recognise me from the Supervalu promotion. We have so many different nationalities here, and they all wanted to buy a ticket.
"I think that's the great thing about the GAA. It includes everybody. We have every nationality playing hurling and football and it's marvellous to hear all the different voices on the sideline cheering them on. It's great for integration."
Charlie now hopes that the Tyrrelstown Troops, and indeed all of Dublin, give him their number one vote as D Day approaches.
The winner of the Supervalu competition gets €10,000.
"That would be massive for us. It would go straight into getting proper facilities. We have a bit of land right in the middle of the community, but it needs a lot of work. We want to bring it up to standard."
Next Monday is the last day for voting. Also in the last four are Patrick Houton (Malin, Donegal), Patrick O'Leary (Ballyclough, Cork) and Maurice Reidy (St Joseph's, Miltown Malbay, Clare).
"We need every vote -- I have even started a bit of a campaign in Wexford! I am asking everybody to go onto www.supervalu.ie/ Real GAA Supporter and vote for Charlie Cleary."
