Carlow IT to lodge appeal expulsion from the Fitzgibbon Cup
CARLOW IT are expected to appeal their expulsion from the Fitzgibbon Cup, having been thrown out just four days short of the competition's quarter-final.
The DJ Carey-managed side topped their group and were drawn against DIT in the last eight but third level chiefs have now amended the fixtures, disqualifying Carlow IT and putting through Mary Immaculate College in their stead.
The Limerick-based institute are understood to have objected to the eligibility of Kilkenny native James Gannon who is currently studying a graduate course in Carlow IT.
Administrators from Carlow IT argued their case but after a reported three-hour hearing in Portlaoise on Sunday evening, were informed that they would be disqualified.
Mary I will enjoy home advantage over DIT, having now technically topped their group.
