Busy 'Knock enjoy Special victory
IT'S been some weekend for Castleknock GAA.
On Sunday morning their adult footballers gained promotion from AFL3 with victory over local rivals St Brigid's to ensure senior status for 2014 for the first time in the club's short history.
It got even better a few hours later as the hurlers qualified for the Leinster Special JHC final thanks to a 1-12 to 0-7 victory over Meath champions Moylagh in Parnell's GAA grounds.
Add in the fact that the footballers also played their promotion semi-final against Whitehall on Friday and the achievement becomes even more impressive. No fewer than seven players were involved in the three games.
Indeed, it was one of the footballers who got the ball rolling against the Royal County men as Paul Mulvihill's goal inside the opening minutes ensured Knock got off to a dream start.
Although Moylagh battled hard for the entirety, the Dublin side always looked in control with the likes of Ronan O'Brien, Brian Dunne, Ronan Lynch and Cian Ó Dulaing all putting in big performances.
Team manager Antóin Ó Cléirigh believed Friday night's game actually helped his team despite his decision to rest Dublin county football star Ciarán Kilkenny as well as Shane Boland.
"A couple of them played the full game which was brilliant. It can go one way or the other," he explained.
"Sometimes games like that can make you tired but some of the lads were actually energised and it gave them momentum for the Sunday match so we were lucky that way. They were really tuned in.
"To be fair, Moylagh were really dogged. After 20 minutes it's probably fair to say there would only be one winner but they kept going and they never threw in the towel."
Their focus will turn immediately to the Leinster final, where Laois side Mountmellick await: "The main thing is to keep lads ticking over, it's been a long year. We'll wait and see what the venue is going to be as that will help us with the planning for the game."
Castleknock GAA are looking for a manager for their senior hurling team who will play in AHL3 and the intermediate championship in 2014.
