Brogan declares himself fit for Kingdom duel

ALAN BROGAN has put his hand up for selection ahead of Dublin’s Allianz Football League opener against Kerry, while his brother Bernard has returned from his world travels with a promise that he’s ready for some "serious training".

Reigning Footballer of the Year Alan has been resting a minor knee injury in recent weeks, with Dublin boss Pat Gilroy declaring him a definite non-starter for the Croker rematch with All-Ireland rivals Kerry on Saturday week.

But speaking today at the launch of Setanta’s GAA coverage for 2012, the elder Brogan confirmed that he will resume Sky Blue training next Tuesday.

When asked if this meant he would be okay for the Kerry game, he replied: “I will if I'm picked! Yeah, I think I'll be okay. I haven't done a huge amount of training now, to be honest, but I'm training next Tuesday … we’ll have to wait and see.”

Brogan took a “bang on the knee” during the Evening Herald/Dublin Bus Dubs Stars game on New Year’s Day.

However, he said the knee “feels grand now”, so much so that he will definitely feature for his club, St Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh, when they play northside rivals Na Fianna in tonight’s Dublin AFL1 semi-final at St Margaret’s (7.30).

Meanwhile, there is some speculation that his younger sibling Bernard could also tog out tonight after he returned home from an extended trip to the Far East and Australia.

“Great to be back on Irish soil. Now down to some serious training!” the two-time All Star tweeted.

At this stage, however, it seems unlikely that the 2010 Footballer of the Year will be deemed match-fit to face the Kingdom.

“I’d say he has a bit of work to do alright – I can’t see him featuring against Kerry,” Alan suggested.
