Westmeath inflicted a third consecutive league defeat of the season on a disappointing Kildare side as they recorded a 0-15 to 0-12 victory in Newbridge yesterday.

Leading 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time after a dominant first-half display, the visitors finished in style with three late points to keep the home side at bay.

Midfielder John Heslin finished the game with six points from frees, which proved crucial.

Goalkeeper Gary Connaughton (above) played an instrumental role for Westmeath, pulling off a series of fine saves.

A 63rd-minute goal from corner-forward Donal O'Hare was the crucial score as Down edged past Cavan by 1-9 to 0-8 in a poor game played in dreadful conditions at Kingspan Breffni Park on Saturday.

Two of yesterday's Division 2 games, between Roscommon and Meath and Galway and Laois, were postponed because of unplayable pitches at Dr Hyde Park and Tuam Stadium respectively.
