Ferguson: I got it wrong

ALEX FERGUSON has changed the habit of a lifetime and admitted that he got his team selection wrong in the Champions League this season.

Manchester United and neighbours Manchester City both hit the Europa League trail with lowered expectations against Ajax and Porto tonight but Fergie is still dwelling on what was an ignominious exit from the Champions League at the hands of lowly Basle.

"In the Champions League, we were making changes each year and it was working for us because our home record was so good but we threw it away against Basle in the home game and were unlucky against Benfica," said Fergie.

"That caught us short and we suffered for it. Now players are coming back, so we can combine the Premier League and the Europa League with the players available.

"Irrespective of the other clubs that have won all three tournaments, it is important for us, with our own history, to win tournaments. I will certainly try to play my strongest team in each round now."
