Cooper gets to taste victory

Jockey Bryan Cooper was back among the winners for the first time since March as Punchestown began their season yesterday afternoon.

Cooper guided the Gordon Elliott-trained Lord Scoundrel to win the opening irishinjuredjockeys.com Maiden Hurdle for his boss Michael O'Leary's Gigginstown House Stud.

That opening race was run under the Irish Injured Jockeys banner after the newly registered charity was launched before racing yesterday afternoon.

Ruby Walsh, who has endured more than his fair share of injuries, has been revealed as Chairman of the Board for the Irish Injured Jockeys, which has been established to offer a public fundraising vehicle to the racing public and wider audience to show their support for our injured jockeys.

A total of 11 directors were announced on the board with Walsh being joined by Andrew McNamara, who holds the role of secretary, and fellow jockeys Barry Geraghty, David Casey, Davy Russell, Fran Berry and Pat Smullen, while the honorary patrons include Sue-Ann Foley, Aidan O'Brien, JP Magnier and Sheikh Fahad Al Thani.

Irish Injured Jockeys will support individual cases and racing's charities to ensure those most in need will receive the greatest financial support efficiently, from public funds raised under the Irish Injured Jockeys banner. Existing charities the Irish Jockeys Trust, the Drogheda Memorial Fund and the Jockeys Emergency Fund will all benefit.

Trainer Gordon Elliott enjoyed a treble on the card at Punchestown with Taglietelle winning the conditions hurdle despite being the outsider of the field, while Un Beau Matin made a winning start over fences in the beginners chase.

Punchestown's most local trainer Ross O'Sullivan was also among the winners when Andrew McNamara guided Dai Bando won the Go Racing In Kildare Juvenile Hurdle in fine style for owner Mark Gittens.

Racing also takes place at Punchestown this afternoon with Roi Du Mee, Don Cossack, Alderwood, Rubi Light and Loosen My Load lining up.
