Carthy comes to the fore in the Sophie Brack Dublin Puc Fada

SOPHIE BRACK was one of camogie's first superstars. She captained Dublin. She won eight All-Ireland medals.

She was selected on the team of the century. She was a full-forward that had blistering pace and the vision of a telescope. Long after she put the boots under the stairs, Sophie continued to serve the sport. She was a top-class administrator.

The Dublin Poc Fada event is named in her memory. It was held in the Phoenix Park.

Stephanie Carthy, the brilliant Naomh Mearnóg and Dublin goalkeeper, won it.

Liz McGuinness (Good Counsel) and Wexford's Mags Darcy (Na Fianna) were never far from the leader board.

Megan Thomas of Erin's Isle won the U14 event. In close contention were Sarah Langan (Erin's Isle) and Aoife Brennan (St Vincent's).

The cultured Carthy then lifted the Leinster prize on the Curragh.
