brophy keeps clon' afloat
Suncroft AFC 0
Clonmullion gained three valuable points in their battle to survive the drop from the TSports Premier Division when they overturned Suncroft by a single goal on Sunday afternoon and dented the visitors' chances of promotion.
The home side took on high-flying Suncroft in this game in the newly named Micheal O'Neill Park looking for a change in fortune.
They almost went ahead after only five minutes when Suncroft 'keeper Kevin Kelly made a fantastic double save from an Eddie Hennessy header.
Martin Redmond, in the Clonmullion goal, had to be equally as vigilant as he made a fine save from Suncroft's Willie Hayes.
The home side made the breakthrough on the 12th minute when an Alan Deere free-kick was headed clear by Croft defender Dylan Byrne, only to drop to Derek Brophy on the edge of the 18 yard box.
Brophy rifled home on the half volley for what must be a candidate for goal of the season.
This early lead by the home side stung Suncroft into action and they slowly began to take initiative and were unlucky not to level on 20 minutes when Ian Byrne saw his shot hit Redmond's post and five minutes later Michael O'Toole's fine effort rattled the Clonmullion crossbar.
Martin Redmond, in the home goal, was called on again two minutes before the half-time whistle when he tipped over another fine effort from the excellent O'Toole.
The second half started with the home side on the offensive and Dominic Redmond came close to doubling the advantage after great interplay with Ross Cardiff, Nathan Robinson and Ryan Hennessy.
The visitors piled on the pressure and the introduction of Aaron McDonald on the hour saw him add an aerial threat to the Suncroft attack.
Redmond in the Clonmullion goals saved two headed efforts from McDonald in a hectic five-minute period.
Suncroft were to have the final chance when Willie Hayes split the home defence with an angled ball to Aaron McDonald, who only had Martin Redmond to beat, but the home 'keeper made the save of the match by tipping over when it seemed the striker must score.
