Boden survive Whitehall comeback
Ballyboden St Enda's 2-18 Whitehall Colmcille 2-17
Ballyboden St Enda's all but secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Dublin Senior 'A' Hurling Championship when accounting for Whitehall Colmcille by a point at Parnell Park last night.
The holders raced out of the blocks, thanks to early points from Paul Ryan and Conal Keaney, before Whitehall halved the deficit following a third-minute free from Sean Gray.
However, there was little Gray or anyone could do to prevent Aidan Mellett firing home a minute later, as he reacted quickest to Simon Lambert's sideline delivery.
Mellett looked especially sharp for the champions as he added two points in quick succession to offset a brace of scores from Gray as Boden pushed on following further scores by Ryan and Niall McMorrow.
Matters deteriorated for Colmcille in the 27th minute, as Mellett and Ryan combined.
And while the latter lost possession when under pressure, Keaney arrived at the perfect moment to hammer the ball home past the powerless Ronan Murray from eight yards.
Leading by 2-12 to 0-6 at the break, St Enda's added to their lead through two early points from Ryan but their opponents showed great character to remain in the hunt, with Conor Sheedy's excellent goal in the 36th minute reflecting their new-found confidence.
Boden's half-forward line was marked absent as Whitehall drove forward incessantly with Gary Maguire making a superb and match-winning save to deny Eoghan O'Donnell a third Colmcille goal after Gray netted from a '65' in injury time.
