We're better off without super casino
THE proposed super casino in a Co Tipperary village would have been the biggest in Europe -- had it gone ahead. The Government took a decision yesterday which stymies the developers' plans for the €460m Las Vegas-style development.
It is a blow to local TD, Michael Lowry, who backed the projectt.
The concept of a resort-style casino was not viable in the Irish market, particularly since the Celtic Tiger era was dead and buried, Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said.
On balance, the Government had concluded that the social impact was likely to be negative. The Taoiseach also said the Government was concerned about the protection of young and vulnerable people.
This sensible decision is one that most people will welcome.
The entire concept at Two-Mile-Borris was inappropriate, and out of keeping with a post-Celtic Tiger Ireland.
