The eyes of the world are upon us
THE eyes of the world are on Ireland today as our destiny is decided at count centres throughout the country. Seldom has there been so much international interest in the fate of our politicians. But this election was different.
Our economic and financial future as an EU state is a matter of widespread fascination and concern in the boardrooms and cabinet rooms of our EU partners and in lands far beyond.
Our EU/IMF obligations are intertwined with the banking and financial systems of other countries in the eurozone.
Our nearest neighbour across the Irish Sea also has an interest in the deliberations of the new government to be formed in the coming days.
Events in Libya and New Zealand may have diverted some international attention. And our PR electoral system may be deemed unfathomable to foreigners, but the decisions of our new leaders will certainly matter to them.
