The big day has arrived -- good luck!

AFTER many years of study and preparation, the moment has finally arrived for tens of thousands of Leaving and Junior Certificate students.

More than 116,500 students sitting both exams went to 4,700 exam centres around the country this morning at the start of what is a major logistical exercise.

Leaving Cert students from other EU countries are also sitting the exams in languages such as Polish, Lithuanian and Romanian.

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn wished them all the "best of luck" as they started their written exams.

Exam time can be stressful for both students and their parents, perhaps particularly so for almost 59,000 students sitting the Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied.

It's going to be a tough few weeks for all concerned, but students should remember there is life and fresh opportunities after the Leaving.

We can only echo Mr Quinn's good wishes and hope our students achieve all they set out to do at an important milestone in their lives.
