Taoiseach's days look numbered

A week is a long time in politics, as Taoiseach Brian Cowen can testify with his credibility now lying in tatters.

Despite his best efforts to move on from the crisis sparked by his disastrous performance on Morning Ireland, clearly the writing is on the wall for him. It is impossible to see how he can remain at the helm of the party now.

The latest opinion poll shows the extent of his loss of credibility, and if he does indeed go as leader, it cannot be long before a general election is in the offing.

The big winner in all of this is Labour leader Eamon Gilmore.

But his party needs to translate his high personal approval rating into votes.

He said his party would field 65 candidates in the next general election. But people are not concerned with numbers, it's credibility that counts among voters now.
