Stupid laser strikes toying with lives

Today we reveal that the Irish Aviation Authority and the Defence Forces have recorded at least 170 instances of people targeting aircraft with blinding laser lights.

Last week an Air Corps helicopter was targeted by somebody using the expensive toys in what we can only assume they believed was some kind of joke. It was a sick one.

On board was a critically-ill baby being transferred to a hospital in Dublin. It's only thanks to the skill of the pilots that the infant got there safely.

Hopefully those responsible for targeting that helicopter feel ashamed, and won't repeat their actions.

Pilots are reporting increasing numbers of attacks, with some even occurring at Dublin Airport - where hundreds of lives are potentially at risk any time it happens.

It is a criminal offence to shine lasers at aircraft and anyone who engages in such irresponsible behaviour should be pursued to the full extent of the law.
