School books burden must be resolved

THE need for parents to spend hundreds of euro on school books has to end. In past years, parents may have suffered in silence.

But this year they can't afford to stump up the cash.

It's outrageous that book publishers have snubbed Ruairi Quinn's call for a price reduction.

And it's infuriating that editions are continually revised and updated.

Instead of children being able to use older copies, parents feel obliged to buy the latest version.

Sometimes the changes can be very minor.

More progress has been made in this regard but there is still some way to go.

Technology such as iPads would help solve a lot of the difficulties.

Splashing out nearly €250 per child on books isn't affordable anymore.

And it can't be good for children to be hauling around backpacks weighing several kilos.
