IT was perhaps the most powerful image yet from the presidential campaign. David Kelly confronted Sinn Fein candidate Martin McGuinness during a walkabout in Athlone about the death of his father in 1983.
Private Patrick Kelly (35) and recruit Garda Gary Sheehan (23) were killed during a gun battle with the kidnappers of supermarket chief Don Tidey in Derrada Wood, Co Leitrim.
No one has ever been convicted for the murders of the two men.
The dead soldier's son demanded that Mr McGuinness name those responsible and said that before there is reconciliation, there has to be truth -- especially for people running for the presidency. The Derry politician said he did not know who was responsible and that his sympathy was "100pc" with Mr Kelly and his family.
David Kelly performed an important public service in posing these questions to Mr McGuinness.
It is absolutely right that all candidates should answer questions about their past.
Good luck to Boys in Green
