Put prejudice aside for the queen's visit

The visits of both US president Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth to this country in May provide us with a unique opportunity.

While we are very quick to welcome the head of the United States, there are some elements in this country that are less than enthusiastic about the visit of a British monarch.

It might be wise for these people to consider the huge trade links Ireland has with the UK, not to mention the billions of pounds they have lent us in a time of crisis as well as the significant drop-off in UK visitors to Ireland in recent years.

The cameras of the world will be on us for both visits. They will particularly monitor our response to Queen Elizabeth.

It is time for us to re-examine our historical prejudices and put them to one side for the long-term good of everyone.
