THE centenary of the 1916 Rising is rapidly approaching so news that it's budget has been set at €26m is to be welcomed.
However, questions have been raised over the sums being allocated by Dublin City Council to commemoration events.
Independent councillor Nial Ring has described a proposed sum of €200,000 as "derisory out of the Council's overall budget of €770m.
He pointed out that the city's New Year's Eve party got more cash splashed out on it last year.
The Proclamation of Independence is not only one of the defining moments in Irish history, it helped shape the story of our capital.
Dublin will be the focal point of events and as such we must ensure the funds are there to put on the best commemoration possible.
While much of the Government's funding will doubtless be spent on events in the capital, we only have one chance to mark this important anniversary and the local authority will have to make sure it steps up to the plate, too.
