Prognosis is looking bad in healthcare
This has been a very bad week for our health service. First we had a record number of people on trolleys in the hospitals.
Then we had a jump in the number of people becoming ill with swine flu.
Finally, we had the news that VHI was introducing huge increases in its prices, not least because of extra charges being imposed for public hospital facilities.
What's particularly worrying is that the health system began to creak alarmingly at the first sign of extra pressure.
And this is after billions of euro were poured into it during the Celtic Tiger years.
It's become depressingly clear that there was very little reform of the system when we had the money to implement major changes.
What hope is there now when all we hear is talk of cutbacks?
