Modern-day slavery hard to believe
THE police raid on an Irish Travellers caravan site in Bedfordshire reads like something out of a Victorian novel, not the 21st century.
Twenty-four men, whom police suspect were being held against their will, were taken away for medical attention.
Some were Slovakian, others Polish or Romanian and a few were English: most appear to have been vulnerable people on the margins of society.
They were found in "filthy and cramped" conditions and detectives believe some may have been there for up to 15 years.
Weapons, drugs and money were also found at the site and five people have been arrested on suspicion of committing slavery offences.
The evidence that slavery is alive and well in a modern western democracy in this day and age beggars belief but reminds all of us to be mindful of those at risk in society.
