Letters: Papal apology is too little too late

As someone who has suffered the lifelong psychological repercussions of sexual assault by a Catholic cleric when I was six years of age, the Pope's apology is far too little, too late.

Sixty now, my memories came flooding back in my early forties -- including visceral physical re-enactment, accompanying smells, and overwhelming feelings of abject horror and helplessness.

Years of therapy have helped me to heal. But what about the millions of Catholics who have been sexually assaulted by paedophile priests and threatened they would, "Go to hell", if they told anyone?

I don't believe that this is a celibacy issue; I believe it is a worldwide paedophile issue, because paedophiles naturally gravitate to any milieu where they will have unrestricted access to children.

I am extremely grateful that I am seeing this worldwide revolution in my lifetime. Now is the time for every Catholic adherent, who has been sexually assaulted by a priest, to stand up and be counted, and to demand the long overdue changes in the Church hierarchy, its policies and procedures on this human degradation.
